Scott Farm Organics - History

Scott Farm was founded in 1835 by Trent Scott’s great, great grandfather.  The land was farmed for many years with a variety of traditional crops including tobacco, corn, soybeans, and cotton.  Black Angus cows were also raised on Scott Farm by Trent and his family.  After the tobacco buy-outs and so many quota cuts on tobacco farmers, Scott Farm was not tended for a few years with traditional row crops.

In January 2007, Trent and his wife Rebecca decided that they wanted to be able to use the family farm again to create sustainable agriculture and bring back a way of life to the farm that existed from a history of four generations of farmers.   Trent took a portion of the land and decided to create a USDA Certified Organic produce farm that would allow his family heritage to continue.

In June 2007, Scott Farm Organics was certified by NC Crop Improvement Association and we were able to sell our organic produce at many different places including farmers’ markets, restaurants, individual customers, and other small locations and groups around Eastern NC.

Some of the crops that are grown at Scott Farm Organics include beets, turnips, sugar snap peas, herbs, onions, leeks, radishes, lettuces, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, okra, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, eggplant, slicing tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, beans, sweet corn, sweet potatoes, and much more.  We continue to try new ideas and change ones that don’t work each year.

Scott Farm Organics is located in the small, rural community of Rhems, NC where five generations of Trent’s paternal and maternal family have lived and farmed.  The portion of farm in use as organic is currently 5 acres located in Jones County on Highway 17.

Being able to work the land using environmentally friendly techniques is significant and also very time consuming.  Many hours of the day are spent in the fields sharing conversations and time with family members, as well as farm planning, hard work, and praying.  Using accepted materials, walking the rows daily, and inspecting the crops keeps everyone quite busy.

Faith and prayer coupled with a lot of hard work and determination is what makes Scott Farm Organics grow.  Being good stewards of the land that we are blessed to have will enable us to have bountiful harvests now and in the future for many generations to come.
